From Lego Blocks To Master Builder

Adam Stanley, the owner and master builder behind Unique Residence, has always loved building things. As a child his first creations were made of Lego. He spent hours creating intricate designs with the same box of plastic blocks. His skills developed as he experimented with timber cubby houses. So it was natural for him to become an Apprentice Cabinetmaker when he graduated from school.

Why settle

Why settle for a standard home when you can have exactly what you want for the same price?

And the sad thing is, most people don’t realise you can have a custom design – a home that is made just for you – for around the same cost.

Unique Residence was created to provide families with one-of-a-kind homes and renovations that are:

  • Thoughtfully designed specifically for you
  • Superbly handcrafted to look better and last longer
  • Finished on time and on budget – guaranteed

An Eye (And Attitude) For Detail

As a cabinetmaker, Adam gained an appreciation for fine craftsmanship, where a millimetre makes the difference between masterpiece and mediocre. He honed his eye for detail working on luxury boat fit outs, premium timber flooring, decorative balustrades, and finishing timber onsite in luxury homes.

“I love the look and feel of luxury,” says Adam. “The time and attention that goes into making a rich, leather Chesterfield Lounge. Or the skill it takes to bring out the unique characteristics of a fine piece of timber.”

Adam quickly became sought after for his meticulous workmanship. But his life was about to change

The Setback That Closed One Door And Opened Another

Manual labour is tough on the body. And Adam gave everything to produce a superior result in his woodworking. So he was devastated when he tore his knee.

His Father offered sage advice encouraging Adam to move from manual labouring to managing and mentoring. So he took a 50% pay cut to study construction and complete an apprenticeship in Building Management. It was a 6 year investment that became the beginning of a new business and life.

A Better Way To Build Homes

Coming from a trade background, Adam understood the importance of discipline on a building site. “Most job sites are a disorganised mess,” he says. “There’s too many tradespeople getting in each other’s way, tools and rubbish everywhere, and building materials arriving late. It’s inefficient, unsafe, and plain unpleasant.”

This led Adam to master the art of scheduling projects (down to the day), so each trade has the space to do their best work. He created systems to ensure building materials are ordered early and ready onsite when needed. And he developed support and supervision mechanisms to keep every site tidy and safe.

“Mistakes disappeared, quality went through the roof, and the best trades wanted to work on our sites,” he said.

A Longstanding Team Of Better Trades

Adam’s reputation as an organised project manager attracted the best trades. So when he decided to start his own company (Unique Residence) he had an instant team of experts.

“I appreciate my team,” he says. “Some of them have been with us for more than seven years. Their skills and dedication are second to none. Our awards are a tribute to them.”

The Home You Want, Not The House You Feel Forced To Accept

While other companies ask you to try to fit your life into one of their generic, catalogue designs (and charge a premium to make even small adjustments), every aspect of our homes is custom made just for you.

We take time to get to know your family, and match the design to your needs (current and future) and individual personality. The result is a house that feels like home – because it was made for you.

The home you want

How can we offer custom homes at such great value?

I know it sounds simplistic, but it all comes down to being organised. Most builders are forced to charge customers thousands extra because:

Trades are not sequenced and locked in

A house must be constructed in sequence. First the site works, then the foundations, then the frame, and so on. When one trade is late, construction stops. When the builder needs to urgently source another trade, they pay a premium.

We sequence all our trades to the day and lock them in ahead of time. This means we get the best trades (they love knowing what they have coming up) and our projects run smoothly and on time.

Materials are not ordered and ready when needed

A day may not seem like much, but when the tiler loses time because tiles are not onsite (or the builder has to source alternative – more expensive – tiles at the last minute), costs go up. Multiply this across all trades and expenses quickly spiral out of control.

We order all materials during pre-planning (before building begins) so everything is onsite and ready when it’s needed.

Defects cost time and money to fix

Without proper scheduling, a building site becomes crowded with trades rushing and working on top of each other. This often leads to mistakes and defects that need to be fixed, costing double in material and labour, putting things further behind schedule.

Our longstanding team of trades are highly skilled dependable. And we schedule them with precision to ensure they have the space and time to do their best work, first time.

Untidy, unsafe building site

Too many building sites are littered with rubbish, building materials, and tools. This causes inefficiencies (including double handling of heavy materials), an unpleasant working environment (that the best tradies refuse to tolerate), and accidents (that cost time, money, and even lives).

Our trades love our tidy, organised sites. With easy access they can do their best work without frustrations or safety concerns.

Lack of support and supervision

Too many trades are left on their own without proper instructions, support, or supervision. (Many sites don’t even have a toilet!) It’s no wonder these builders struggle to find good trades to work on their houses.

Nobody picks up a tool on our sites without clear instructions and expectations. Our onsite supervisor closely monitors every detail to ensure our premium standards are exceeded. And we give our trades the support they need to produce a result we can all be proud of.
